Motor Planning/Executive Functioning

Does your child struggle to stay on task or complete things in an appropriate amount of time? Do you find them avoiding activities or putting them off to the last moment?

Motor planning (praxis) and executive functioning are closely linked cognitive-motor processes involving the brain’s ability to ideate, organize, and execute tasks. They enable purposeful physical actions—like dressing or playing—by coordinating sensory input, memory, and sequential steps. Deficits often appear as clumsiness, poor task initiation, poor time management or difficulty with multi-step activities. Kids with difficulty in motor planning/executive functions skills will often avoid tasks or skip parts of the task, demonstrating difficulty in organization, sequencing and planning. In occupational therapy, our trained therapists engage children in fun and meaningful activities that encourage problem solving and build these skills to help make them successful in everyday tasks.
