Children's Wellness Program in Westchester County

Exercise sticks when it is fun. A program designed by a physical therapist to build your child's strength, stamina and flexibility, and to get them to actually enjoy moving.

01What It Is

What is the wellness program?

Not every child who needs to move more has something wrong with them. Some kids are simply not drawn to physical activity. They opt out of the soccer season, get winded on the stairs at school, and would choose a screen over the backyard every single time. It is easy to read that as laziness. Usually it is not. A child who has never felt competent at a physical skill has no reason to pick it, and the less they pick it the less competent they get. The wellness program at Developmental Steps in Port Chester and Mt Kisco was designed by a physical therapist to break that loop. It is not treatment for an injury or a delay. It is structured, supervised exercise built to help children develop active, positive lifestyles, and to convince them through experience rather than lecture that moving is worth their time. A physical therapist develops an individualized program around your child's own goals, using age appropriate activities and fun, child friendly games to address cardiovascular fitness, general strengthening and flexibility.

The design principle is simple: integrate knowledge with activity. A child who understands why their heart beats faster when they run, and who has felt themselves get measurably better at something, is far more likely to keep exercising once the program ends. That is the real goal, that physical activity becomes a permanent part of daily life rather than something an adult made them do for a while. Wellness can run as one on one sessions or in groups of two children with similar goals, which some kids prefer, because a partner turns effort into a game. And because a physical therapist designs and runs it, the program can be built around a child who is deconditioned, coming back from a long break in activity, or who has finished physical therapy and needs somewhere to hold on to the gains.

02Who It Suits

Who the program suits.

Wellness suits children who need movement, structure and a win more than they need treatment. Three situations that fit it well.

01

The child who opts out of everything physical

She has quit two sports, calls gym her worst subject, and will not try anything new in front of other kids. A program built around her own goals, pitched at a level she can succeed at, gives her a place where effort reliably works. Children usually start volunteering for things again once that happens.

02

The child who just finished physical therapy

He met his goals and was discharged, and now you are quietly worried the strength will slip back over a long school year. Wellness keeps the habit and the fitness going in the same building, with people who already know his history, without the intensity of a treatment plan.

03

The kid who is out of shape and knows it

She runs out of breath before her friends do, sits out the second half of the game, and has started to notice. Cardiovascular work, general strengthening and flexibility at a difficulty she can handle change the stamina, and they change the story she tells about herself.

03What To Expect

What a wellness session looks like.

A session looks like a very well run gym class for one or two children. Here is how it comes together.

01

Goals in your child's own words

The physical therapist starts by finding out what your child actually wants: to keep up on the soccer field, to climb the rope in gym, to ride a bike to a friend's house without stopping. Baseline fitness, strength and flexibility get measured, so there is something concrete to compare against later on.

02

An individualized program, built as play

Then a program designed for that specific child, using age appropriate activities and fun games rather than a worksheet of exercises. Cardiovascular fitness, general strengthening and flexibility all get addressed, and the difficulty rises as your child improves, so sessions stay just hard enough to hold their interest.

03

Habits that outlast the program

Along the way your child learns why the work matters, which is what turns an assigned activity into a chosen one. Families get ideas that fit inside an ordinary week, and progress is re-checked against the starting measurements, so improvement is something your child can see rather than take on faith.

Good to know

Wellness runs either one on one or in small groups of two children with similar goals. Individual treatment sessions are 45 minutes, while group and class sessions vary in length depending on the program. Community programs and classes are paid at registration rather than billed on a monthly statement. Call either office to ask what is running right now.
