|Here’s what one mom had to say about attending our recent FREE Tummy Time Class:|
Tom, father of infant boy
When our pediatrician expressed concern that our 4 month old son Thomas had weakness in his left arm and that it wasn’t moving the same way as his right we decided to act immediately and engaged with Hayley at Developmental Steps for physical therapy sessions. After an initial consultation and examination Hayley determined Thomas’s left arm was behind where is should be for his age. Together we discussed a plan and mutual goals – Hayley rapidly constructed a program for our son.
After 5 months of sessions we were amazed at how improved his arms movement range and strength were. In fact, it was our pediatrician who commented, “Had I not known, I never would have noticed anything; he looks great! By the end of sessions, Thomas was crawling at full pace on an inclined ramp and throwing a ball with his left hand better than his right!
The time spent with Hayley at Developmental Steps was absolutely critical to Thomas’s improvement. Hayley kept the program fun for our son while demonstrating compassion for worried parents – Hayley has amazing interaction skills with children and is excellent at communicating feedback to parents. We strongly recommend anyone with similar concerns to work with Hayley; your kids will thank you.
Vanessa, mother of infant girl and toddler boy
I have had 2 children requiring physical therapy work with Hayley and Joe who have been fantastic therapists. The large majority of the time, we worked with Hayley for my daughter Caitlin, 5 months old with torticollis and my son Christian 2 1/2 years old, for in toeing and low muscle tone issues. From the very beginning Hayley was very professional, highly experienced and produced quality sessions with my children. Every time she saw either of them, Hayley used her time with them efficiently, very attentively focusing on the areas that needed the most work always ending with recommendations for daily at home exercises. I appreciated how well Hayley listened to whatever our concerns were, really worked with us to accommodate our schedule and gave us invaluable honest and helpful advice.
I’m happy to report that after 9 months of therapy my daughter is a secure walker with her torticollis fully resolved and therefore has graduated from therapy. My son, who has progressed beautifully , becoming stronger and more coordinated, still needs the therapy, where he continues to make gains each and every week. I can’t thank and recommend Developmental Steps enough for being there for us as true partners with our children’s physical needs.

The entire Developmen
We have been incredibly happy with the treatment our children are receiving.
The office is a fun and challenging therapeutic environment. Joe and Hayley have worked with our twelve year old daughter for almost three years. Their treatment plan has improved her muscle tone and posture, thereby decreasing her daily discomfort. The home exercise program they have designed for her takes into account her physical needs as well as her busy lifestyle. Hayley and Joe are kind, empathetic, flexible and thoughtful.
Our son’s coordination and physical strength has improved dramatically since he began working with Sue several months ago. He loves the fun games and challenges she creates for him in the office. Even as a 9 year old, he sees evidence of how the program has helped him on the ball field and in gym class. As a team, we feel that Developmental Steps always has our children’s physical and emotional well-being in mind – continually evaluating their progress and creating new ways to move them along their individual paths. –Jill, mother of 12 year old daughter and 9 year old son
Patricia, mother of 8 year old son with Cerebral Palsy
Developmental Steps is a magical place. It is a place where your child and family can find amazing advice and guidance for getting through life challenges and it is a place for your child to grow and achieve their full potential.
Our 8 year old son has Cerebral Palsy and our family has been working with Joe Kiefer and Hayley Binder for 4 years. Joe is above and beyond a traditional PT. He is a friend, an advisor and truly a mentor for us as we have moved through raising a child with a physical disability. He is an integral part of the team that works with our son and has guided us through two intensive surgeries. He and Hayley worked tirelessly with us to implement a very strenuous post surgery PT plan and it worked! The reality is that they get how hard it can be to make tough decisions on what is best for your kids…and they give great advice and support.
Hayley and Joe are very practical and flexible and always design realistic, custom programs for our son. They work with each family to set long terms goals for their child and then break them down for areas of focus. For example, they both have come to do “home sessions” where we focus on Daily Living Skill activities. They are not afraid to take one step back to take two steps forward. They understand that kids have ups and downs, have periods of progress and other times when they may stall. Joe and Hayley see our son on different days, but they constantly talk with each other and work on complementary skills so he doesn’t “burn out” and continues to grow physically.
The best part about Developmental Steps is that they understand the need to establish a trusting, caring relationship with the children and families they work with. During our time working with Developmental Steps, there have been hard days and easy days which is to be expected. Joe always has a smile on his face and patience throughout. He understands how to motivate kids to achieve their full potential and to provide a listening ear to parents who look out into an uncertain future. Hayley is a bright light each time she works with our son and, while she works him hard, he is always so proud of himself at the end.
When he was very little, most people said our son would not walk or would be an “at home” only ambulator. Well, I am happy to say that Developmental Steps has helped our son learn to walk..literally! He uses a walker at home and at school and has begun working with crutches as well. He uses a wheelchair for longer distances, but is incredibly independent at making the choice about how he wants to get around in the world. As a parent, one of the things I hope for is that our son will be able to live independently some day. Developmental Steps has already enabled us to make that hope a reality.
When I first came to Developmental Steps, my cerebral palsy controlled my life. I could not even dress myself. Now, I live on my own in Washington DC as a student at Georgetown University Law School. This could not have happened without Joe. My particular variant of CP means that I cannot walk and only have use of one hand. Joe taught me how to do everything necessary in daily life, with only one hand. He has an incredible ability to devise innovative and inventive solutions to any problem. Joe’s tenacity and indefatigable spirit means that no challenge is too difficult to overcome. Moreover, Joe has an enormous reserve of patience that stops him from ever giving up on a patient; even when they give up on themselves. Before I came to Joe, I was not used to having a therapist who was actually capable of making a difference in my life. Thus, I was sometimes skeptical and chose to put my academics above therapy. Joe was steadfast and never stopped trying to help me. His brilliant mind has given me my freedom. I consider him more than a therapist. He is my friend. To this day, he is always available to answer my questions and help me through jams. I recommend him unequivocally. If you work hard, Joe can help you overcome any physical limitations. I am living proof.
Jennifer, mother of 4 year old
We came to Developmental Steps when we determined that our 4 year old son had developmental delays that were strongly linked to his own fears and anxiety. The first day he started physical therapy with Hayley, she immediately put him at ease and gained his trust. Over the next few months he made progress that we could have never imagined which led to activities such as running, jumping, swinging and even indoor rock climbing! He learned about his own physical abilities and became both self aware and self confident. We only worked with Hayley for a few months, but now he approaches new sports and activities with excitement. He is currently involved in dance, gymnastics and ice skating and he’s eager to try new things. It was a wonderful experience!
Michele, mother of 10 year old boy
